A Smart Morgan and Barb Wire
Accidents can happen with any type of fence as most horse people know. We don't have any more barb wire on our place but our neighbors still use it.
Many of the nearby pastures were built years ago by the "older" folks and that is what people still use today. They are large pastures and some of the barb wire is overgrown with weeds and hidden in old yards. I wanted to share a happy barb wire story with you and of course it involves a Morgan, my best friend, a black stallion named Boogie Beam!
Several years ago Boogie decided the grass was greener on the other side of his fence and decided to go visiting and took his friend Duchess (Beams Bold Dolly) with him down to the neighbors yard. This was without my permission of course and by the time my frantic hubby had driven his tractor across the field to tell me that they were out they had been gone about 20 minutes.
I grabbed a couple of halters and a lunge line and got in the truck to go and bring them. Now I just have to say, we live in a very rural farm area and have hardly any traffic on the road and Boogie had gone visiting our neighbors mare before when I "might" have left the gate open somehow. The neighbors place is about a 1/2 mile south of our place and as soon as I cleared the trees around our yard site and I saw them standing by the barb wire fence "talking" with the mare on the other side. Now this is a 30 year saggy barb wire fence remember.
Anyway Boogie never moves while I drive over and park on the side of the road. Duchess is circling around Boogie and trying to chase the other mare away from the fence. Boogie still hasn't moved. Well when I get down the ditch and over to him I can see why. He had reared up and come down with both front legs tangled in the 3 strands of barbwire!! Well be still my beating heart! The first thing I did (after I took several deep breaths and told myself to calm down) was slip a halter on him and toss the lead over his back. I ignored Duchess and started pulling the wire away.
I had to lift his leg and pull the wire back and he had to hold his leg up in the air without moving. For some reason he did this for me. So I would leave his foot hanging and grab another strand and pull it back. I got one leg untangled and did the same for the other leg. All this with a strange mare sniffing his nose and Duchess trying to chase her away from her boyfriend!
Normally When Boogie is talking to a mare he will stamp his front feet. He must have known not to do this and he just was amazing while I freed him. He didn't move an inch unless I put his leg there. When I set down the first leg he planted it and never moved till I freed the second leg. I backed him up and checked him over and all he had was a small cut on his pastern. I led him up to the truck and drove home while hanging onto the lead through the window and Duchess just followed us right into the yard.
Morgans are just the best!!
